The awesome folks at Willow Garage recently decided to give away 10 of their PR2 Robots with their Open Source Robot OS (ROS) at no cost. Valued at several hundred thousand each this was no small gesture by  Willow Garage to show there level of commitment to the further expansion in robotics development. This is effort by Willow Garage was  to authentically grow their entire market  in the form of “benevolent market leadership”. By sharing their work Willow Garages hopes that it will be able to create a  platform where developers can innovated, update,  and experiment to create better robotic software.   This will enable other developers in the industry to more easily and quickly move past the early phases of robotics software design which they feel too much time and money is spent on. A unified a approach to software development in the field of robotics will greatly out weigh any individual effort and push the industry further along. This approach is meant not to benefit Willow Garage as a company but their industry as an whole, competitors and all.
